Yamaha RxV661 First Impressions
Strengths: Audio Performance, Yamaha DSP modes, Easy to setup and calibrate
Weakness: Remote control, No OnScreenDisplay via HDMI (requires a second cable to TV: s-video or component).
I liked this receiver. Audio performace watching "King Kong" was impressive. Same thing for music (Classical, New Age, Jazz, Country, Pop). However, after having tried also an Onkyo TX-SR804 during the same time frame, I'd go with the Onkyo, not so much for the sound because I liked them just as much, but for usability features such as: much better remote control (with light) and that a single...

Great Receiver for $400 price range!!!
Strengths: 7.1, HMDI pass through with Audio, Easy Auto Setup...Overall great receiver for $400!!
Weakness: None
I currently use this receiver with a PS3(BluRay, Games) and HD Cable. The pass-through works great. I currently run the Audio/Video through the HDMI (no need for optical cable). I replaced my old Sony(5yrs) with this Yamaha, it makes a world of difference...even with below average speakers. The biggest change is the balance of sound..which I could never get right with the sony (the auto setup was...

Yamaha RX-V661 - Great receiver for the price
Strengths: Awesome sound, a receiver you can use for many years due to the many modes and options which are also seen in higher end receivers.
Weakness: Speaker cable connections too close making it difficult to insert individually if you do not use banana plugs, the remote is subpar.
Overall a great receiver for the price. It has many connection options including HDMI. Easy to set up and start using. Auto speaker calibration works well. The remote control is terrible. You have to sit directly in front of the receiver for it to work. Sound quality is awesome with optical digital cables. Have not tried using the HDMI connection yet. I have heard that there are some audio...

Yamaha is the Best!
Strengths: Lots of power Lots of inputs Good Looks
Weakness: Poor remote power
I sold my flagship RX-V3300 and purchased this. I know that sounds a little strange, but I wanted HDMI and XM radio and this little receiver really seemed to crank. I wasn't disappointed when I got it home. Got a really good deal on an open box. Couldn't really tell the difference between "open box" and sealed box. When you take 25% off the normal price and get the same thing, it sure makes a...

Excellent feature set, especially for the price
Strengths: HDMI inputs, ability to handle almost all HD audio. Clean sound, easy to use and performs well, has preouts and bi-amping capability
Weakness: Doesn't decode the latest audio formats or convert analog video to HDMI
I bought this receiver over the Onkyo 605 because it can covert 5.1 channel LPCM decoded by HD-DVD/Blu Ray players into 7.1, while the Onkyo can't. Also, the 661 has pre-outs, so you can use a separate amp if you want, whereas the Onkyo doesn't. To get these features, you would need the Onkyo 705 or higher, which is significantly more than the 661. The 661 also has the direct mode for 2 channel...
